What Are PFAS?
Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) are a group of man-made chemicals that have been used in various industries around the globe since the 1940s. PFAS are found in a wide range of consumer products such as non-stick cookware, water-repellent clothing, stain-resistant fabrics, and some firefighting foams.
Why Are PFAS a Concern?
PFAS are known as "forever chemicals" because they do not break down in the environment and can accumulate over time. These substances can contaminate water supplies, and long-term exposure to PFAS has been linked to serious health effects, including:
Increased risk of kidney or testicular cancer
Changes in liver enzymes
Increased risk of thyroid disease
Decreased vaccine response in children
Increased risk of high blood pressure or pre-eclampsia in pregnant women
Increased cholesterol levels
How Do PFAS Enter Drinking Water?
PFAS can enter drinking water through various pathways, including:
Industrial discharge from manufacturing facilities
Runoff from areas where firefighting foam was used
Leakage from landfills containing PFAS products
Use of PFAS-containing fertilizers made from treated sewage sludge
What Are the Standards for PFAS in Drinking Water?
To protect public health, extensive research is ongoing, and as of April 2024, the EPA has set new, stringent limits for PFAS in national public water systems at 4 parts per trillion (ppt). This incredibly low limit highlights the severe health risks posed by PFAS. To put it in perspective, 4 ppt is equivalent to less than one drop in an Olympic-size swimming pool.
In New Jersey, the state has set similar strict Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs) for certain PFAS compounds in drinking water:
PFNA (Perfluorononanoic Acid): 13 parts per trillion (ppt)
PFOA (Perfluorooctanoic Acid): 14 parts per trillion (ppt)
PFOS (Perfluorooctanesulfonic Acid): 13 parts per trillion (ppt)
These standards ensure that drinking water is monitored and treated to reduce PFAS contamination to safe levels.

PFAS Contamination Map
Understanding the spread and impact of PFAS contamination is crucial for addressing the problem effectively. Below is a link to a map provided by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) that shows areas of known PFAS contamination. This map can help you see the extent of contamination in your area and understand the importance of testing and treatment.
